Founder, Marquerite King, a single parent of two adult children, Daneea Badio and Isaac Nathan, first envisioned the concept of a single parent organization, nearly 20 years ago.  As Ms. King struggled raising her two children alone, she encountered many times when there seemed to be nowhere to turn for help or direction.  She revisited her notes regarding her single parent organization many times over years, but wasn’t sure how to move her vision forward.  Then in late 2002, Marquerite asked her daughter, Daneea, for help in launching Single Parent Connection, Inc.  They completed the necessary research, program development and paperwork to establish SPC as a 501(c)(3), non-profit corporation.  SPC’s first partnerships were formed with the United Way of Cobb, the Austell Community Taskforce and Mt. Sinai Church. This collaboration resulted in Single Parent Connection’s first Single Parent CEO Seminar being held in February 2003.

Since the beginning of 2003, Single Parent Connection has obtained grants, donations and in-kind support.  SPC has hosted numerous seminars and workshops, providing education and information to hundreds of single parent families.  We’ve established a wonderful team of volunteers and knowledgeable, professional presenters.  In addition to the above noted partnerships, SPC has received program support from the YWCA of NW Georgia, the Atlanta History Center, Osborne Prevention Taskforce, Osborne High School, Turner Chapel AME Church, MB Howard & Associates, Harmony Inc., Higher Education International and Haven Enterprises.   Marketing support has been attained through partnerships with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Metropolitan Atlanta, Cobb Community Collaborative, Douglas CORE, Sutton Middle, Dunbar Elementary, and Rivers Elementary Schools.  SPC has also received in-kind donations of office equipment and workshop supplies from Career Connection, Inc., Staples, State Farm Insurance, Wachovia, Washington Mutual and SouthTrust Bank.

Single Parent Connection is most excited about the positive impact we’re having on the lives of the single parent families throughout Metropolitan Atlanta.  Most SPC program participants tell us their primary challenges are the need for more time, more money and personal support and direction.  While there are other organizations, which provide parenting classes and support to needy families, most often these organizations are viewed as offering reactive programs for families in crisis and not as sources of proactive education and information.  Through Single Parent Connection’s programs of education and empowerment, we have seen results that are immediate and lasting.  Our parents report that they are returning to college, consciously spending more quality time with their children, improving their financial practices, teaching their children the value of earning their allowances, and so much more.
